Meet The Interns

Carolin "Caro" Hettgen - MGIS
I am 25 years old and from Bernkastel-Kues in Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany, a charming small city surrounded by vineyards along the Mosel River. I am currently a student at the University of Koblenz, where I am going to graduate soon. Over the past four years, I have gained a lot of experience working as a substitute teacher.
I am eager to learn about the American school system and to get to know the American culture, while also sharing my own culture. I chose Amity primarily because it offers the opportunity to work in an elementary school and experience American life firsthand by living with a host family.
I am genuinely excited about the upcoming year and I hope it will be a fulfilling and enriching experience.

Ronja Wahler - MGIS
I am 22 years old, and I am studying to become a High School teacher with a focus on PE and English, complemented by History as a third subject. Since the school system of Germany differs from the one here in the US, I’m going to be a teacher from 5th to 13th grade. I am pursuing my studies in the beautiful city of Mainz, the capital of Rhineland-Palatinate in southwestern Germany. Mainz is particularly known for its carnival (Fassenacht), market breakfasts, and vineyards.
Besides my studies, I actively play soccer and the violin, and I enjoy traveling, meeting new people, and discovering new cultures. During winter, I like to snowboard, ski or do cross country skiing.
The idea to become a teacher developed during my time as a riding instructor at a horse stable, where I worked every summer since I was 15 years old. It was there that I realized how fulfilling it can be to teach young people and support them in their development. Following this and after being a soccer coach for a while, I decided to pursue a career in teaching. While studying, I’ve already worked as a substitute teacher and a ski instructor.
The decision to do my internship at MGIS is based on my desire to broaden my horizons and expand my experience in international education. I am eager to learn about the cultural differences in the school system and gain valuable insights into the workings of a school abroad. These experiences will enrich me not only as a teacher but also as a person. I chose to apply for the Amity program primarily because it offers the opportunity to work in a school and experience the American way of living firsthand by living with a host family.
Through this internship, I hope to deepen my passion for teaching in a new, international context and better prepare myself for the diverse challenges and opportunities that the teaching profession brings. I look forward to helping shape the future of young people and guiding them on their educational journey.
While in the program, Ronja is staying with the Enriquez & Kramer families.

Nick Borntraeger - MSL
I will be an intern at the Milwaukee School of
Languages for the next school year. I am from the beautiful town of Wolfenbüttel in
Lower Saxony, Germany and I’m currently studying to become a teacher in
Göttingen, the subjects being English and political science.
Both my parents are teachers, which is why the profession of a teacher was an early wish of mine. Since the beginning of my studies in 2018 the career as a teacher is one I still aspire to begin and the chance to deepen my knowledge and to expand my methods of
teaching through the internship is a dream come true. As I am at the end of my Master’s this internship will also be the last one during my studies before I am officially a teacher, which is why I am so grateful to be doing it here!

Aside from my studies I play volleyball, go to the gym and if I have the chance, I
occasionally read a book or two. I also really like boardgames and hope that I can
teach the students some favorites of mine.

I am really excited for the opportunity to be doing an internship in the USA and in
Milwaukee and I can’t wait to meet you all in person!
