Milwaukee German Immersion School is a 4-year old kindergarten through grade
5 elementary school founded by Milwaukee Public Schools in 1977. We serve as
a magnet school to attract children from all parts of Milwaukee with our
innovative total language immersion program. We maintain a racially balanced
school, with approximately 40% African-American students. We are a city-wide
program with students coming from all parts of the city. 10% of our students
are from the suburbs.
School Achievements:
- MGIS was recognized as a Deutsche Partnerschule by the German
government.
- 90% of MGIS 4th grade students are proficient or advanced in reading.
- Students graduating from the MGIS program have a 100% high school
graduation rate compared to 62% state average for public schools.
- MGIS is a Blue Ribbon Excellence Award Winning School.
Curriculum: MGIS provides children with the academic, social, and
economic benefits of becoming bilingual in German and English. All children
(except in the exceptional education program) receive reading, language
arts, mathematics, social studies and science instruction in German from the
first day of school through the fifth grade. In second grade, students are
introduced to 30 minutes per day of English reading instruction. The amount
of English is increased to approximately one and one-half hours per day at
the fourth and fifth grade levels. Extra-curricular activities during the
school day include: violin, piano or band lessons, folk dance group, Fitness
Club, Handchime Choir, and softball leagues. After school recreation
activities are sponsored by the PTA.
Faculty: Our Immersion teachers, assistants and Program Implementer are
totally bilingual. More than 70% of our Immersion staff are native speakers
of German.
Facility: We are located adjacent to a park in a residential area on the
northwest side of Milwaukee. Our building was constructed in 1958, and
underwent a $2 million expansion.
Admission Policies: Children are only accepted at the K4, K5, and Grade 1
levels without any prior knowledge of German. There are no special
enrollment requirements for entrance into our school at these levels.
Applications are taken during a two-week sign-up period in January. If there
are more applicants than there are openings, students are randomly selected
by computer lottery. Non-selected students are placed on a waiting list for
the upcoming year. Admission at Grades 2-5 is dependent upon the student's
prior German/English experiences and space availability. Students may
continue in the Grade 6-12 German Immersion Program at Milwaukee School of
Languages.
